CFP: “Out of Iberia: Convivencia as a Multicultural Paradigm”
International Congress on Medieval Studies, May 13-16, 2010
Kalamazoo, Michigan
Session Sponsored by the Texas Medieval Association

Much problematized, the notion of ‘Convivencia’ has dramatically shaped the study of medieval Spain. While ‘Convivencia’ originated as a purely Iberian scholarly model, it - and its challenges - may also be applicable in other contexts. Can the challenges of examining cross-cultural and cross-religious interaction and influence presented by this area of study have applications outside of the Iberian peninsula? This session seeks papers focused not only on both the ideals and realities of ‘Convivencia’ in Spain, but also on regions where the questions raised by this mode may also be investigated; Norman Sicily, for example, or the Latin Kingdoms of Jerusalem. If ‘Convivencia’ - and challenges to its ideals - have provided a model for examining cultural interaction among different groups living cheek-by-jowl, can the questions raised by this model help us investigate other regions and periods, where the interaction between different socio-cultural groups may be more obscured than in Spain? Papers from all periods and disciplines are encouraged.

Proposals should include an abstract of no more than 300 words and a completed Participant Information Form (required by the Medieval Institute); the form is available at
