45TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MEDIEVAL STUDIES
MAY 13–16, 2010
WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY/ KALAMAZOO

HOSTAGES AND CAPTIVES IN THE MEDIEVAL WORLD

Although hostages and captives appear to be fundamental to many aspects of medieval society, it has only been more recently that scholars have begun to explore their roles thoroughly. This session proposes to add to the burgeoning scholarship on the topic. Topics of interest/discussion may include but are not limited: historical and literary approaches, gender approaches, the crusades, lordship, the role of sureties, agreements between kingdoms/nations, legal or economic aspects, warfare, issues of the quality of care, and images in art. This panel is not limited in geographical regions or time period; submissions from all areas and interests are encouraged!
