Call for Papers: Templars, 42nd Interna...

To mark the 700th anniversary of the bull Pastoralis praeeminentiae, ordering the

arrest of Templars across Europe, T.R.E.S. at Kalamazoo is organizing two sessions

at the 42nd International Congress on Medieval Studies, May 10-13, 2007.

Our first session, Templar Survivals I: Suppression and Disposal, will concentrate

on the trial of the Templars, the suppression of the Order, and the disposal of

Templar properties. Where did displaced knights and brethren go and what became of

Templar properties, both in Europe and the Latin East? Our second session, Templar

Survivals II: Transmission and Reformation, will examine survivals and refoundations

of the Order. Why have so many individuals and organizations -- from

pre-revolutionary French clerics and post-revolutionary French aristocrats to

eighteenth-century Scottish Freemasons -- appropriated the Templar past?
