Free money for study abroad comes in two forms: scholarships


and grants.

·Your school might have specific grants available if you enroll in a study abroad

program sponsored by your school



·Apply for grants or scholarships for study abroad early; you’ll have excellent

opportunity to obtain a grant or a scholarship for the desired study abroad program.

Minority/Low-Income Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, the Benjamin A.

Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for study abroad

awards. The competition is open to U.S. citizen students who are receiving federal

Pell Grant funding at a two- or four-year college or university. Recipients are

awarded up to $5,000.

Pell Grant (en español)

The Federal Pell grant was established to offer extra assistance to lower income

students. As a needs-based grant, the eligibility is determined by your financial

position. Certain requirements must be met:

·Applicant must be an undergraduate student

·Student must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen

· Students must have a high school diploma, GED or show the ability to benefit

from the program

If the eligibility requirements for the Pell Grant are met, up to $4,050 (2005-06

school year amount) is awarded to be used toward your education­--including study

abroad.

HACU-Laureate International Scholarship Program



Laureate International and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities

have teamed up to offer scholarships to students who study abroad with Laureate

International and who attend a school that is a member of HACU (for listing of

member schools see www.hacu.net).

Historically Black Colleges and Universities Scholarship



IES offers $2,000 scholarships to students who are attending Historical Black

Colleges and Universities (HBCU), and plan to study abroad with IES. An amount of

$1,500 is awarded toward the program and $500 is awarded for students’ airfare

abroad.

IES (Institute for International Education of Students) Minority Scholarship



IES offers merit-based scholarships from $3,000 to $5,000 for minority students

participating in an IES study abroad program.

IES Berlin Minority Scholarship



IES, in collaboration with the German Ministry of Economy and Technology, offers a

scholarship up to $7,900 for minority students (non-Caucasian) who study abroad in

Berlin with IES.



AIFS Minority Scholarship



AIFS awards two full scholarships to minority students who study abroad with AIFS.

The full scholarships cover all program costs and roundtrip airfare. In addition to

the full scholarships, AIFS offers three minority scholarships valued at $2,000

each.



Robert B. Bailey Scholarship



The Robert B. Bailey Scholarship is administered by CIEE. The purpose of this

scholarship is to encourage study abroad among groups who have traditionally been

underrepresented in study abroad programs. Scholarships are available to

participants of CIEE’s programs.

Fulbright Grants



One of the most extensive grant programs is the Fulbright Grants sponsored by the

U.S. Department of State. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities

for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and

artists who conduct career-launching study and research abroad. Visit more

Freeman Asia Grants



The Freeman-Asia award offers grants to students that demonstrate financial need and

who will study in East or South East Asia. Funds are used assist students with the

cost of the study abroad program and other expenses such as airfare, additional

living costs, books, etc. Students will be award up to $3,000 for summer programs,

$5,000 for semester/quarter programs and $7,000 for year long programs.



John E. Bowman Travel Grants (CIEE)



These scholarships are administered by CIEE to provide assistance for individuals

who choose to study abroad or volunteer to go abroad with CIEE in a non-traditional

location.



Boston University International Programs Grants and Scholarships



Scholarship and grants are available for students participating in one of Boston

University’s International programs. Scholarships and grants are based on merit and

need, and range from $300 to $3,000.

Butler University, Institute for Study Abroad

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,500 are available for students participating in

study abroad programs through the Institute for Study Abroad. Travel grants are also

available to cover airfare costs on Butler IFSA group flights.

Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation offers grants and scholarships to “further international

understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries.” Depending

on the length and type of study, grants range from $12,000 to $26,000.

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship

The U.S. government administers the National Security Education Program (NSEP)

scholarships. Such scholarships are offered to undergraduates who will specifically

pursue the study of languages and cultures currently under-represented in study

abroad. Languages and cultures emphasized by NSEP are those critical to the U.S.

national security. Science, political science, history, business and economics

majors are especially encouraged to apply.
